Itraconazole

Itraconazole

Itraconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat a variety of fungal infections. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triazole antifungals. Here are some key points about it:

Mechanism of Action: Itraconazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This disrupts the structure and function of the fungal cells, ultimately leading to their death.

Indications: Itraconazole is used to treat fungal infections such as:

Systemic fungal infections, including aspergillosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and cryptococcosis.
Fungal infections of the nails (onychomycosis) and skin.
Oral and esophageal candidiasis (thrush).
