Cefixime

Cefixime

Cefixime is an antibiotic medication belonging to the class of cephalosporins.

Mechanism of Action: Cefixime works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It does this by binding to specific proteins called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that are essential for the formation of the bacterial cell wall. By interfering with cell wall synthesis, Cefixime weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and ultimately bacterial death.

Indications: Cefixime is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including:

Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and tonsillitis
Ear infections such as otitis media
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Gonorrhea, an sexually transmitted infection (STI)
